Developer creates Super Mario 64 port for Sega Dreamcast
A developer has made a fairly playable port of the game Super Mario 64 for the Sega Dreamcast console. Recently it appeared that a port of this Nintendo game was also running on a PlayStation 2.
The version of Super Mario 64 for the Dreamcast was created by a developer with the account name MrNeo240. The version can be seen in a video from Fred Wood’s YouTube account, running on a Dreamcast. According to the player, it is the first completion of Super Mario 64 on this Sega console, in the form of a speed run. A week ago he also showed a port of the Nintendo game for the PlayStation 2. That port of the game was made by fgsfds. Fred Wood is also behind the indie game studio Mokuzai Studio.
Both ports still have some visual errors and there are some issues with textures, but they are playable on the two non-Nintendo consoles, without the need for an emulator. That’s been possible since fans decompiled a last year source code of the game. That makes it possible to release the game for all kinds of other systems, such as for the PlayStation 2 and the Dreamcast. There is also already a DirectX 12 version. Super Mario 64 was originally released for the Nintendo 64 in 1996.
