Developer creates database tool for importing torrent sites
Developer Stephen Smith has built an open source tool that allows the databases of a number of torrent sites to be imported locally. The user can then search and browse the offer. The tool should thus improve the availability of torrents.
The software, called BitCannon, can currently import databases from KickassTorrents and Demonoid. These are stored by BitCannon in a MongoDB file. The user can browse and search the site structure in the browser after importing. Using magnetlinks, files can be downloaded via a compatible bittorrent client.
According to developer Stephen Smith, BitCannon is useful when, for example, a torrent site is down. He hopes that eventually the tool will also allow users to self-host torrent sites by offering a mirror of well-known sites online.
BitCannon’s code is open source and available for Windows, OS X and Linux. The software, which is available on GitHub, is said to have some difficulty with databases containing more than a million torrents, according to TorrentFreak, and the developer wants to use a different database engine.
