Developer 7-Zip releases Linux version

Developer Igor Pavlov of the popular 7-Zip has released a Linux version of the archiving application. The port is similar to the previous application p7zip, which is no longer maintained.

Pavlov announced his first version of the port from 7-Zip to Linux on Sourceforge. These are 64bit versions for x86-64 and ARM64 and 32bit versions for armhf and x86. It is not the first port of 7-Zip for Linux because the application p7zip already existed, a commandline version for Linux and Unix from another developer.

However, the last version of p7zip dates back to 2016 and that developer does not seem to maintain the software. Like p7zip, 7-Zip for Linux is a console application. According to Pavlov, this contains a benchmark command to test whether the application works correctly and to show the processor performance: ./7zz b “-mm=*” “-mmt=*” -bt > bench.txt.

Google developer Christian Blichmann recommends the application in a sandbox because it is not yet certain that security vulnerabilities of p7zip have been fixed and it is in any case better to run an archiving application that works with many file formats in a sandbox. In addition, he advises to develop code publicly via, for example, GitHub and GitLab and not to drop code on Sourceforge every so often.
