Details about new venture Android founder are emerging
More details have surfaced about the new company of Andy Rubin, the co-founder of Android. He will focus on start-ups that develop hardware for healthcare. Previously, Rubin worked at Google.
Various American media are writing about Rubin’s new company, which is called Playground Global. Fortune is the first to report that the company recently raised $48 million in investments. The Wall Street Journal later added that Google and HP, among others, are putting money into Playground Global.
US-based Playground Global will support companies that develop hardware for healthcare. In addition to Rubin, former Microsoft employee Peter Barrett, WebTV founder Bruce Leak and Matt Hershenson, also former Google, have joined the board. Unlike other similar companies, Playground Global does not ask for a share in the startups, but money.
It’s the first time more information about Rubin’s new venture has surfaced. Rubin was the co-founder of the Android company, which was acquired by Google in 2005. Over the next eight years, Android grew to become the market leader in mobile operating systems. All the while, Rubin remained at the helm of Google’s Android division until he went on to lead the robotics division there.
