Destiny 2 players complain about bans for using software with overlays

Players of the PC version of Destiny 2, released Tuesday night, are complaining that they are being banned for using software with overlays. This concerns, for example, streaming software, Fraps and Discord. Bungie has not yet commented on the bans.

Players are reporting the bans on the Bungie forum and on Reddit, among others. Some players claim to have been banned while creating a character in the menus before actually playing. Destiny 2 seems to have a mechanism that detects overlays and then automatically bans players.

Many players would have been unwittingly banned in this way, because they have, for example, running software that displays framerate statistics in an overlay. It is not yet clear whether all players using such software have been banned. According to Bungie’s policy, bans are permanent and there is no appeal.

A ‘mentor’ on the Bungie forum claims that using this software does not result in a ban. A moderator of the forum marked that post as the answer to the topic in question. Bungie has not yet officially responded to the bans that have been issued. A developer responsible for the PC version claims on Twitter that the messages about unfair bans are nonsense.

An article on Bungie’s website states that software that uses overlays is not compatible with Destiny 2. The developer mentions there, among other things, the Game Capture mode of applications such as OBS and XSplit. According to Bungie, players must use hardware capture equipment, or use Nvidia’s Shadowplay or AMD’s ReLive in exclusive fullscreen mode. OBS and XSplit can be used in windowed mode.

Furthermore, Bungie indicates that the overlay functions of communication software such as Discord and Mumble are not compatible with Destiny 2. The same applies to applications that display frame rates and other statistics, such as Fraps, MSI Afterburner and EVGA Precision XOC. The article does not state that users of such software will be banned.

The PC version of Destiny 2 came out Tuesday night and is available through Battle.net. The game was previously released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The first part never appeared for the PC. The game seems to run smoothly for most users, but there are some issues; for example, the game does not work with AMD Phenom II processors and numeric keys cannot be used.
