DeLorean Showcases Electric Spiritual Successor to DMC-12

DeLorean Motor Company has unveiled an electric car. It concerns the Alpha5, which, like the DMC-12 well-known from the Back to the Future films, is equipped with gull-wing doors. The electric car accelerates to a speed of 88 miles per hour in 4.35 seconds.

The Alpha5 is a completely new car, which has features of the classic DMC-12. The design is also reminiscent of the DMC-24, aka Medusa, a sedan version that never appeared. That was a variant with four seats, just like the new electric model.

The car contains a 100 kWh battery that would be good for a range of 482 kilometers. Sprinting from standstill to about 100 km/h takes just under 3 seconds and the top speed is about 250 km/h. The manufacturer also specifies the sprint to 88 miles per hour: it goes in 4.35 seconds. Whether the Alpha5 can time travel at that speed, just like the DeLorean car in the Back to the Future movies, is not yet known.

DeLorean Motor Company plans to produce the car “in the next few years.” In the United States, the Alpha5 will be priced at $175,000. It is not yet known when the car will actually be released. Businessman John DeLorean’s original company went bankrupt in 1982. In 1995, the name and remaining parts were acquired by a Texas company. Several years ago, that company started releasing replicas of the original DMC-12.

The DeLorean website is still counting down to the official unveiling on Tuesday at the time of writing. Various websites, including car car and IGN, were able to take a look at the car and published the details. DeLorean will show the Alpha5 for the first time at a car show in August.
