Dell starts sales of Chromecast competitor for Venue tablets

Dell has started selling Cast, a device that is similar to Google’s Chromecast. With the cast, users can stream content to, for example, a television, but for now the device is only compatible with the Venue tablets from the manufacturer itself.

The manufacturer has started selling through its US website. The Cast is touted as an accessory for the Venue-series Android tablets that Dell sells, but is similar in functionality to Google’s Chromecast. For example, it is possible to connect the Cast via HDMI to, for example, a television, in order to send content from the tablet to the TV. With the Cast it is possible to send video with a maximum resolution of 1920×1080 pixels to an external device such as a TV.

Striking about the Cast is the presence of a USB port on the back; this allows users to connect external equipment such as a keyboard, among other things. For example, it is possible to reply to an email if it is displayed on an external screen via Cast.

For the time being, the Cast seems to be only offered via the American Dell site and with a price of 80 dollars, converted 62 euros, it is considerably more expensive than the competing Chromecast. It is not yet clear whether there are plans to expand the release to Europe. Dell states that in the meantime compatibility for its Windows tablets is being worked on. In addition, a Dell spokesperson told Citeworld that support for devices from other manufacturers “is not excluded”.
