Dell will introduce a PowerEdge server with a new Opteron CPU at the end of this month. Buyers can opt for a maximum of 96 cores and 1TB of RAM. The server is, as the name suggests, intended for intensive calculations.
The new server, named PowerEdge C6145, coming on the market at the end of this month for an unknown price. Dell has equipped the server with a new Opteron CPU, which chip designer AMD recently released. Four Opteron chips with a total of 48 cores can be housed in one C6145. Up to 500GB of RAM can be built in.
The C6145 comes in a 2U chassis, which fits two systems. The new Opteron CPU 6180 SE used in the C6145 offers a clock speed of 2.5GHz and a TDP of 140W. In addition, Dell is updating existing PowerEdge servers; from now on they can also be equipped with Intel’s Xeon 5600 CPU.
