Dell introduces convertible that detects presence

Dell is equipping its new Latitude 7400 2-in-1 with ExpressSign-in, which detects the user’s presence and follows automatic facial recognition login. The laptop is also said to have a battery life of 24 hours. Dell will show the laptop at CES 2019.

Part of Dell’s business Latitude series, the 7400 2-in-1 is the first laptop to feature ExpressSign-In, which is Dell’s name for combining a proximity sensor and using an infrared camera to sign in a user . The sensor wakes the computer from standby when someone approaches and then uses Windows Hello to log the user in with facial recognition. If the user then walks away from the convertible, Windows is automatically locked. In addition, the 7400 2-in-1 can also be equipped with a fingerprint and smart card reader for any additional layers of authentication.

The Latitude 7400 2-in-1 has a battery life of 24 hours in the MobileMark battery test, according to Dell. That long battery life is made possible by a particularly economical screen, presumably the panel that Intel announced during Computex. The long battery life is also achieved with the optional 78Wh battery. The standard battery has a size of 52Wh.

The hardware is based on the Intel Whiskey Lake platform. Dell does not specify which processors are used, presumably because Intel has not officially introduced Whiskey Lake processors with vPro support.

The housing is made of aluminum and the whole weighs 1360 grams, when the smallest battery of 52Wh is chosen. Dell gives the laptop HDMI 1.4, two USB-a connections with a maximum speed of 5Gbit/s and two Thunderbolt 3 connections. There is also a micro-SD reader and an optional smart card slot and SIM card slot for a 4G modem. It is not yet known which standard configurations Dell will provide and at what price.
