Dell Introduces 6mm Thin Tablet at IDF

Dell showed its latest tablet at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco. Intel CEO Brian Krzanich showed off Intel’s new RealSense technology, unveiling Dell’s new ultra-thin tablet. The Venue 8 7000 is only six millimeters thick.

The Dell Venue 8 7000 was shown on stage as an engineering sample as a vehicle to demonstrate Intel’s RealSense technology. That technology uses multiple cameras to add depth information to photos. However, the prototype turned out to be a fully production-ready Dell Venue 8 7000 tablet that should be available later this year, in October or November.

The tablet has a screen diagonal of 8.4 inches on which 2560×1440 pixels can be seen. The OLED screen extends to the sides of the tablet. On the front is a 2-megapixel camera. The main camera on the back is an 8MP one, but it doesn’t do its job on its own. The camera is assisted by two 720p cameras that add depth information to the image. Intel calls it RealSense technology and demonstrated some of the image effects made possible by the technology.

This makes it possible to focus on any desired point afterwards, just like with a Lytro camera. In addition, thanks to the computing power of the Atom 3500-soc in the tablet, color information can be manipulated, so that, for example, the foreground is colored while the background is made black and white. The quad-core Atom-soc is assisted by 2GB of RAM, a storage capacity of 16GB and Wi-Fi and 4G connectivity. A price has not yet been announced, but must be sought in the higher segment.
