Dell equips mobile workstations with Ubuntu

Dell is making four mobile workstations in its Precision line available with Ubuntu installed. A model of the Developer Edition workstations will be available immediately, with the remaining three to follow later this year.

The Dell Precision 3530 Developer Edition is a 15.6″ workstation available in variants with eighth generation Intel Core processors and Xeon processors. The system supports up to 32GB 2666MHz and up to 2TB SSD storage. The Precision has also an Nvidia Quadro P600 card with 4GB vram Dell installs Ubuntu 16.04 LTS on the system, which is also certified for RHEL 7.5 and comes with the drivers.

Later this year, Dell will add the Precision 5530, 7530 and 7730 to its line of Developer Edition workstations. These are models with a 15.6″, 15.6″ and 17.3″ screen respectively. The Precision 5530 is a model with thin bezels and a Quadro P2000 card. The other two get a Thunderbolt 3 connection and come with AMD Radeon WX and Nvidia Quadro cards, these workstations also run Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and are RHEL 7.5 certified.

The Developer Edition systems are part of Dell’s Project Sputnik to deliver computers running Linux, Dell’s Barton George describes. That project the company started in 2012 with the XPS 13 laptop and has since expanded to more systems.
