Dell and Intel working on Windows 10 device with 6.4″ screen and laptop CPU
Dell and Intel have been working together since mid-2014 on a device with a 6.4″ screen and a laptop processor from Intel. The device did not have a call function and should have appeared in 2017 at the earliest with a Kaby Lake Y processor on board.
Smartphone enthusiast Evan Blass writes on VentureBeat about the Dell Stack, a project by Dell and Intel with the aim of making a complete computer replacement in smartphone format. It concerns the device of which photos appeared over the weekend, but at the time it was not clear whether it was a product that has yet to be announced, or whether it concerns a prototype that has never been released on the market.
The name Dell Stack was used internally to describe the project. The 6.4″ device would have a full HD resolution and could be used as a laptop, desktop and tablet. The whole relied heavily on the Continuum functionality of Windows 10. Dell and Intel were planning, according to Blass to use an x86 processor from the Kaby Lake Y series, the devices could be configured with both the Intel Core m3, -m5 vPro and the -m7 vPro, which are chips with a tdp of 4.5 watts.
In tablet mode, the device would use 3.5 watts and in desktop mode that would increase to 12 watts. There should be options with 4GB and 8GB ram and 128GB or 256GB storage capacity. The device should be a maximum of 9mm thick. According to Evan Blass, Dell and Intel were also planning a second generation of the device and that would be a full smartphone.
VentureBeat has seen several documents indicating that the device should have hit the market in the spring of 2017 at the earliest. It’s not clear what the current status of the project is, but Evan Blass’ article doesn’t seem to suggest that the device will hit the market.
