Sony shipped 5.1 million Xperia smartphones in the past quarter. That is 33 percent less than in the same quarter last year. PlayStation console sales are improving. 9.7 million of these were delivered, which is an increase of 15.5 percent.

The sales figures are apparent from Sony’s quarterly figures for the last three months of 2016. Many divisions of the Japanese electronics manufacturer are struggling with declining figures. The Mobile division, which is responsible for the Xperia phones, had a turnover of 249 billion yen. That is 35 percent less than in the same quarter last year. However, the division made a profit of 21.2 billion yen, converted about 174 million euros.

The revenue of Sony’s Imaging division, which includes cameras, fell by 10 percent. 1.6 million cameras were delivered in the quarter, compared to 1.8 million a year ago. Sony also delivered slightly fewer televisions: 4.1 million units compared to 4.2 million in the same quarter a year earlier. The turnover of that branch was 12 percent lower.

The game branch’s turnover increased by 5 percent. Sony delivered 9.7 million PlayStations, an increase of 15.5 percent from a year earlier. The introduction of the PS4 Pro has contributed to this, but the manufacturer does not disclose figures for individual products. Sony’s chip division is also doing well. Sales there rose by 17 percent.

Sony is still struggling with the aftermath of the earthquake that halted production of CMOS sensors. The company now estimates the impact at 53.5 billion yen, about 439 million euros. This mainly concerns lost income because it was not possible to produce.

In the quarter, Sony achieved total revenue of 2.4 trillion yen, down 7 percent from a year earlier. The profit halved to 92.4 billion yen, about 759 million euros. According to Sony, the knew was lower due to a depreciation on the film branch.
