Death Strandings Online Portion Doesn’t Require PlayStation Plus Subscription

Players will most likely not need a PlayStation Plus subscription to play the online portion of Death Stranding. Normally this is necessary for access to the multiplayer parts of PS4 games.

A UK retailer recently put a PlayStation 4 Pro bundle online, with the console featuring a special style based on Death Stranding. The PlayStation 4 Pro box of this bundle has a sticker stating that the game does not require a PlayStation Plus subscription.

This is largely due to the fact that Death Stranding’s multiplayer differs from the way the online parts of games are usually put together. For example, as far as is known, there is no co-op or a mode in which players can compete against each other. The multiplayer of the game is described by the makers as asynchronous. Players can see the consequences of the actions of other players in their world. For example, if another player leaves an item or places a ladder, other players can see it in their world and possibly use it. In principle, as a player you cannot see other players, but you can see the effects of their actions. Players can also help each other indirectly, for example by sending items or sharing shelters.

The game world revolves around cities that have isolated themselves from other cities and thus from society. Hideo Kojima, from developer Kojima Productions, previously described Death Stranding as a “completely new type of action game” in which players are tasked with reconnecting isolated cities. Death Stranding comes out on November 8 for the PlayStation 4.
