Data from survival game Rust was lost due to fire at OVHcloud
The developer of online survival game Rust reports that 25 of its European servers are offline as a result of the fire at cloud provider OVHcloud. ‘A lot of data’ has also been lost that cannot be recovered.
It is not yet clear what kind of data was lost and how it affects players. The developer of Rust reports on Twitter that the respective servers were located in OVHcloud’s SBG-2 data center. The data center was completely destroyed by fire on Wednesday morning.
The fire at the French OVHcloud started early on Wednesday morning. The SBG-2 data center in Strasbourg has been completely lost and the adjacent SBG-1 has also partly gone up in flames. The fire brigade was able to rescue SBG-3 and SBG-4, but those data centers are still offline. OVHcloud offers various cloud services, including the hosting of game servers. The company has data centers worldwide.
The PC version of Rust came out of Early Access in 2018 and still has an active player base. At the time of writing, there are more than 80,000 active players, according to figures from SteamDB. The all-time high was over 245,000 concurrent players two months ago.
