D-Link Introduces COVR Mesh Router with WiFi 6 and Voice Support

D-Link has announced nine new routers in the run-up to CES, including the COVR X1872. This is a mesh system consisting of a router with satellite with support for Wi-Fi 6, or 802.11ax, and voice control.

The D-Link COVR X1872 offers four integrated antennas for 2×2 mu-mimo connectivity. The mesh router supports two streams on the 2.4GHz band and two streams on 5GHz for respective throughputs of up to 574 and 1201Mbit/s. There are four lan ports and a wpa3 variant on the COVR router and satellite, and the system supports wpa3 security. The mesh router can be operated via the app and also by voice control with the Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. For example, users can set up a guest network using voice control.

D-Link will start selling the COVR X1872 in Q2 2020 under the name “AX1800 Whole Home Mesh System” for $270. It is not yet known when the product will be released in the Benelux and what it will cost in euros.

D-Link is also releasing a single COVR router with WiFi 5 instead of WiFi 6 support: the COVR-1900. In addition, four WiFi 6 routers will appear, of which the Smart AX5400 is the most interesting. This network product has six antennas and can handle two 2.4GHz and four 5GHz streams for throughputs of 547 and 4804Mbit/s respectively.

Finally, there are two more WiFi 5 routers in the DIR series. All of the company’s new routers are mesh products with support for wpa3 and the Wi-Fi Alliance’s EasyMesh standard. This should make it easier to place network products from different manufacturers in a mesh setup. They can also all be controlled by voice via the app.
