Cydia store closes possibility to make purchases

It is no longer possible to make purchases in the alternative app store for iOS Cydia after a problem with the authorization of PayPal tokens. The store founder actually wanted to close the Cydia store completely this year.

Access to existing downloads will be retained. Cydia founder Jay ‘Saurik’ Freeman responds to Reddit’s advice to Cydia users to remove their PayPal account from their profile. According to him, the PayPal token authorization issue is not a data breach and affects only a small proportion of users. They would have to be logged in to Cydia for abuse and at the same time browse a repository of malicious content.

Freeman goes on to say that he actually planned to close the Cydia store entirely this year. “This service costs me money and it’s not something I’m passionate about keeping up with,” the founder says. Instead of the entire closure, he has blocked the possibility of purchases. This week he will reveal more about the future of Cydia. The decision will not affect the development of the Cydia app and Cydia Substrate.

Cydia appeared online in February 2009. The App Store was an alternative to Apple’s App Store for jailbroken iPhones, iPads, and iPods. By August 2009, 10 percent of the then 40 million iPhones and iPods would have Cydia installed, Wired reported that year.
