Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer features scrapped due to ‘chaotic launch’
Developer CD Projekt RED had refrained from adding multiplayer features to Cyberpunk 2077 due to the game’s “chaotic 2020 launch.” That’s what Philipp Weber, the senior quest designer of Cyberpunk 2077, told Eurogamer.
Weber says to the game news site that CD Projekt RED’s priorities had changed after the launch of Cyberpunk 2077 in 2020, when the game suffered from performance issues, bugs and crashes on all platforms. “The priority was that the game had to perform well. That meant stopping other projects in development. With Cyberpunk, we wanted to do many things at once. At a certain point, we had to make a choice and ask ourselves what’s important.” said Weber.
Before the release of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt RED promised multiple times that the game would include multiplayer features. The studio also considered releasing a standalone Cyberpunk multiplayer game, but that idea has also been dropped, the CEO said. Adam Kiciński know last year in a conversation with investors. “Instead of focusing primarily on one big, online experience, or game, we want to focus on adding online features to our future games,” Kiciński said at the time.
