Cyanogen Launches MOD Platform for App Integration in OS
Cyanogen started the MOD platform, which allows developers to deeply integrate their apps into Cyanogen OS. As of Cyanogen OS 13.0, the first mods appear pre-installed. Cyanogen works together with Microsoft on mods, among others.
The developer platform MOD gives access to APIs that were previously only available to the makers of the operating system. This allows them to integrate their apps more deeply into the OS. Cyanogen gives some examples of mods that have been worked on, including in collaboration with Microsoft. The mods will appear pre-installed in the operating system.
For example, there will be a Skype mod that is integrated directly into the dialer and thus offers access to Skype contacts. In addition, a mod has been developed for Microsoft’s personal assistant Cortana. This gives the possibility to create reminders and agenda items via voice commands. Also, a OneNote mod for taking notes will appear wherever you are in the operating system. Microsoft has long had close ties with Cyanogen. In addition, mods have been developed with other parties such as a Truecaller mod and Hyperlapse for photo editing.
Cyanogen is starting a “MOD Ready” program for manufacturers and carriers so that they can make devices suitable for the mods. Calling it a “post-app era,” the maker will allow mods to be integrated into MOD Ready devices starting next month, starting with the release of Cyanogen OS 13.0.
