Cyanogen claims it has 50 million users
The company Cyanogen claims that it has about 50 million users with its releases of Android. CyanogenMod is the most popular custom ROM based on Google’s mobile operating system.
Cyanogen, which made the claim in a presentation of which it posted a photo on Instagram, said last year that CyanogenMod had ten million users. It is obvious that to arrive at this figure, the company added up the users of custom rom CyanogenMod and the installations of Cyanogen OS, which is standard on various smartphones.
The company also claims that it has more users than ‘Windows Mobile’ and BlackBerry combined. That seems unlikely. While there are no recent figures for either platform, AdDuplex said there were around 38 million active users by early 2014, while Microsoft claimed the number had increased by 50 percent by early 2015. With that, Windows Phone alone would exceed 50 million active users. In addition, the figures are not comparable: Windows Phone and BlackBerry are standard on devices, while many users install CyanogenMod on their already purchased device.
Although CyanogenMod once kept statistics on its own site, that hasn’t happened for a year and a half now. CyanogenMod has been the most popular custom rom based on Android for several years now, partly due to the support for many devices and the updates for devices that the manufacturer no longer supports. CyanogenMod has been around since 2009, when the first Android devices appeared on the international market.
