Crytek will add Linux support to the CryEngine, used in the Crysis games and Ryse: Son of Rome, among others. The German company will demonstrate the new support at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, March 19-21.

Whether this means that Crytek will port its existing games to Linux is not clear. In any case, when developing future CryEngine titles, it will be easier to port them to Linux. That also means that support for SteamOS, which also runs on Linux, is easier to get. Crytek announces the news on its own site.

Crytek has been working on Linux support for some time, according to a vacancy from July last year in which the German company states that it is looking for a developer with the necessary Linux experience. Previously, Valve rallied behind the open source operating system because, according to Valve CEO Gabe Newell, open source platforms allow more innovation. Before that, he called Windows 8 a disaster.
