Cruise’s self-driving taxi is available to the public in San Francisco
Beginning in February, people in San Francisco will be able to sign up for a ride on Cruise’s self-driving taxi. The vehicle drives completely autonomously and no longer has a driver behind the wheel. For the time being, there is a waiting list to take a ride with the robot taxi.
The company has been testing its robot taxi in San Francisco for the past few months. According to Cruise, the self-driving vehicles are ready to transport passengers who do not work for the company. You can register via the website to get on the waiting list.
Cruise has not disclosed the number of vehicles involved. However, the taxi rides are still free, because the service still has to be approved. According to The Verge, the robot taxis are currently only allowed to make test drives and drive a maximum of 48 km/h. Cruise has put a video online in which a number of test persons take a test drive with the robot taxi service.
The company is also working with Honda and GM on a self-driving shared car. This vehicle also no longer resembles a traditional car and has, for example, no side mirrors or a steering wheel. It is not yet known when this vehicle will drive through the streets.
