Cruise organizer claims up to ten times faster WiFi connections at sea

Cruise operator Carnival Corporation says the company will introduce new marine Wi-Fi technology that is about ten times faster than their current Wi-Fi connections. This would be made possible by allowing installations on land to cooperate with satellite installations.

Passengers would get a faster, more stable and more powerful WiFi connection at sea, Carnival Corporation reports. The cruise organizer claims to achieve internet speeds through its WiFi@Sea technology that are roughly ten times higher than the current WiFi connections offered on cruise ships. However, the company does not provide figures that support such a claim. It is reported that antennas on land will be placed along heavily trafficked cruise routes, as well as some satellite installations.

The receiving equipment on the cruise ships would automatically connect to the strongest signal. The hardware should be rolled out on all 101 Carnival Corporation ships. The Holland America Line, among others, is in the hands of the cruise organizer.

At the end of the current calendar year, the service should be available in North America to ships sailing in the Caribbean, one of the most popular cruise locations. Next up is ships sailing off Alaska and Europe would follow in 2015 or 2016.
