The upcoming reboot of the Modern Warfare series is getting cross-platform support with input-based matchmaking. The game only matches between PC players and console gamers when they use a controller, to keep the battle fair.

Last week, Infinity Ward announced that the reboot of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will allow PC and console gamers to play together and it is now clear that the matchmaking is based on input method. For example, console players are only paired with PC players if both use a controller. Whether the new Modern Warfare will support mouse and keyboard use on consoles remains to be seen. There are very few games for the PS4 and Xbox One that support keyboard and mouse.

The Modern Warfare reboot follows in the footsteps of Fortnite with this feature, which makes the same distinction in input methods in matchmaking. There it is so that even a single mouse user in the party causes the group to end up in a ‘kbm lobby’.

Nowadays games sometimes support not only both controllers and keyboard & mouse, but also switching between the two during gameplay. Even the interface button prompts are often adjusted during gameplay to accommodate the switch. It is not yet clear whether developer Infininty Ward will limit this.

Activision and Infinity Ward announced the Modern Warfare reboot last week. The game will not get a season pass; There will be free expansions for all players. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare comes out on October 25 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The PC version only appears via Blizzard’s Battle.net launcher.
