Criminals steal 27 million euros worth of ether through a leak in wallet
Criminals have been able to steal more than 150,000 ether, currently about 27 million euros, through a vulnerability in Parity’s wallet software. White hats say they have emptied other vulnerable wallets as a precaution.
Parity confirms that there was a vulnerability in version 1.5 of its wallet software that affected all users with multisigwallets. These are wallets that different people can access with their own keys, so not all funds are managed by a single person. A patch has since been released, according to Parity. According to Coindesk, the vulnerability allowed the attackers to steal 150,000 ether. The hackers’ ethereum address currently shows a balance of approximately 83,000 ether.
Another address, which belongs to The White Hat Group, shows a credit of approximately 377,000 ether, which amounts to 67 million euros. In a statement, the group states that it has emptied vulnerable wallets as a precaution after the discovery of the leak. About the leak, the group says it was easy to exploit. The group claims to want to open a new multi-sigwallet for those affected and to return the ether.
The theft took place at three organizations: Swarm City, Edgeless Casino and aeternity. They have published all three statements. This incident follows previous ethereum hacks. For example, strangers managed to steal millions of dollars in ether earlier this week during the initial coin offering of the Israeli CoinDash. At the beginning of this month, it turned out that the major South Korean stock exchange Bithumb had been hacked.
