CrashPlan stops backing up for consumers
Online backup service CrashPlan will stop offering its services to consumers. The company behind the service, Code42, will now only focus on companies. Current customers will keep their subscription until it expires.
CrashPlan says it will keep customers’ data safe as long as their subscription is still running. In addition, the company is extending the subscription period of all customers for an additional 60 days, giving users time to move their data. With immediate effect, new customers can no longer sign up for the CrashPlan for Home subscription.
As of October 23, 2018, the service can no longer be used in its entirety. Users who now have a subscription that expires after that date will then be switched to a business subscription for the remaining term at no extra cost. CrashPlan proposes to customers to switch to Carbonite. Customers who make use of this service receive a discount. Competitor Backblaze is trying to get CrashPlan’s customers with its own discount campaign.
Code42 says it will stop CrashPlan for Home because the requirements for online storage for consumers and business users are becoming more and more separated. By stopping the consumer offer, the company believes it can better focus on business solutions.
