‘Counter-Strike in Source 2 engine will be released as beta within a month’

‘Counter-Strike 2’, presumably in the form of CS:GO with an engine upgrade, is in the works and will be beta tested within a month. At least that’s what game journalist Richard Lewis sources say, but a recent Nvidia driver also contains references to the game.

Lewis’ sources, who readers may know from Dexerto, have “knowledge of the game’s development” and state that the game with the working title Counter-Strike 2 has been in the works for some time and that the beta will be released in March or otherwise on day one at the latest. starting from April. The work on CS2 would also be the reason why certain bugs in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive are taking longer than usual.

A big change from CS:GO would be the use of Source Engine 2. Naturally, this must be accompanied by a graphical upgrade. An example of a game that runs on Source 2, in addition to Dota 2, is Half-Life: Alyx.

Besides the upgrade to a more recent engine, not much will probably change. The piece also calls the game “a new version of CS:GO.” There is also something to be said for that: today’s Counter-Strike has a large community of players, from both casual players and competitive professionals. That in turn is related to the huge economy of skins and the tournament circuit surrounding the game. By making CS2 very similar to CS:GO, a problematic split of that community is avoided.

Lewis’ sources also report that the tickrate of official servers is going from 64 to 128. That would bring the game to the same level as competitor Valorant in that regard. It wasn’t certain if this would work out in time for the beta, the sources say. In addition, the game will have an improved matchmaking system, so that players will no longer have to go to third-party services to be matched with players of similar skill level.

Whether CS2 will eventually replace CS:GO, Lewis had no answer yet. Counter-Strike still co-exists with CS:GO, but Dota 2 was different when it moved to Source 2. Then the original continued as Dota 2, until it was decided that the new game, Dota 2 Reborn, was sufficiently better than the original, after which the replacement took place.

The reason for turning the rumor mill is that Valve enthusiasts found references to the game in an Nvidia driver. The drivers contain specific profiles for CS2. It may contain optimized settings. Many unannounced titles have already been leaked via Nvidia GeForce NOW.
