Corning presents new Gorilla Glass variants for smartwatches
The American Corning has announced Gorilla Glass DX and DX+. These are glass variants for use in smartwatches. Before that, Corning already had Gorilla Glass SR+ in its range.
The difference between DX and DX+ is how well they resist scratches, Corning reports. DX scratches about as fast as other Gorilla Glass, while DX+ should scratch less quickly. It is unknown exactly how Corning achieved that. The American company does not disclose the exact improvements in the glass types.
Corning already presented SR+ for use in smartwatches a few years ago. DX and DX+ are first released for smartwatches, but the supplier is looking at the possibility of using the glass type for larger devices. It is unknown which devices are involved.
The supplier makes the chemically toughened glass by depositing ions on the surface of the glass, causing a permanent state of compression. It also presented Gorilla Glass 6 for smartphones, which has to survive more drops from pocket height compared to the previous generation.
