Nintendo continues to suffer from poor sales of the Wii U console, according to the company’s annual figures. The Japanese console maker only sold 2.72 million Wii Us in the past fiscal year, much less than Nintendo had expected.

According to the annual figures, with the fiscal year ending at the end of March, Nintendo has managed to sell a total of 6.2 million Wii U consoles. Despite an uptick in sales around the holiday season, sales numbers are disappointing, as the company expected to sell 9 million consoles a year ago. The 3DS handheld fared better, reaching sales of 12.2 million units.

For the current fiscal year, Nintendo expects sales to grow, with 3.6 million Wii Us expected to sell during this period through the end of March 2015. According to Nintendo, 3DS sales would be about 12 million units.

Over the entire financial year, Nintendo saw its loss increase to EUR 328.6 million. A year earlier, the loss was still 257.7 million euros. Nevertheless, Nintendo expects to be able to write black numbers again in the current financial year and to arrive at a profit of approximately 280 million euros.
