‘Computer deliveries rose by 15 percent in 2021 and Apple in particular benefited’
Shipments of computers rose by nearly 15 percent in 2021, according to research firms IDC and Canalys. The computer market would not have grown at such a percentage since 2012. In particular, deliveries of Macs are said to have increased.
Manufacturers delivered 348.8 million computers in 2021, which was 14.8 percent more than in 2020, IDC calculates based on its Personal Computing Device Tracker. That is the survey with which the agency estimates the amount of desktops, notebooks and workstations delivered every quarter. According to IDC, the number of systems shipped since 2012 could have been even higher had it not been for chip shortages and other parts supply issues.
In the last quarter of 2021, growth was modest: deliveries were 1 percent higher than in the fourth quarter of 2020. According to IDC, Apple especially benefited from the increased demand last year, but Dell also saw its deliveries increase significantly. Lenovo and HP remain the manufacturers with the largest market shares, according to the survey.

Research company Canalys publishes comparable figures. Deliveries at this agency also increased by a rounded 15 percent in 2021. According to Canalys, not only did the shipments of Mac systems soar, but Acer also took advantage of the high demand for PCs. In 2020, shipments increased by 11 percent, according to Canalys, and this agency also points to 2012 as the last year in which the PC market grew as it did in 2021.
