Company sells modified PlayStation 5 panels again despite threat from Sony
The company CMP Shells is again selling side panels for the PlayStation 5, after the company stopped doing so in November. Sony then threatened a lawsuit, but CMP Shells now claims that the company is legally “untouchable” because the patent has not yet been granted to Sony.
CMP Shells now sells black ABS plastic panels for EUR 49.90, including VAT. The company currently produces a thousand panels, according to the FAQ the company wants to guarantee exclusivity. CMP Shells does not rule out making more panels in the future. According to the company, all orders were shipped at the end of February. For now, the company only sells panels for the PlayStation 5 with disc tray.
The company sold all the side panels under the name CustomizeMyPlates last year, but stopped doing so when Sony threatened a lawsuit. Sony claimed at the time that the British company was infringing Sony’s intellectual property with the side panels. Then the company sold the panels in multiple colors, such as silver, red and blue. At the time, the panels were also cheaper at 35 euros than they are now.
CMP Shells now claims that the Sony patent has not yet been granted and that all side panels sold prior to the granting of the patent are ‘untouchable’. CMP Shells stated that it did not know this before and therefore stopped selling the panels in November. The company adds that it claims it has not copied anyone’s design property and that the company’s panels help with cooling better than the original PlayStation 5 panels. CMP Shells says that the company can therefore continue to sell the panels even after the patent has been awarded. CMP Shells does not provide evidence for the improved cooling. In the renders shown, the CMP Shells design does not appear to differ from Sony’s design.
It is the second time that CMP Shells has changed its name, although this time it seems to be a split. CustomizeMyPlates is still active and sells vinyl stickers for consoles. The two webshops probably still have the same owners; for example, they share the same logo and both companies sell the same God of War Ragnarök skin for the PlayStation 5 controller. The company previously called itself PlateStation5, which the company dropped under pressure from Sony.
