A French start-up called Tempow has introduced a system that allows multiple Bluetooth speakers to be connected to a television for a surround sound installation. The system must work with all Bluetooth speakers.

With the system, called Tempow Audio Profile TV, up to six speakers can be connected wirelessly for a 5.1 setup, writes Engadget. Tempow makes TAP TV suitable for all manufacturers who want to integrate the system into their televisions, set-top boxes or media players, according to SlashGear.

Vincent Nallatamby, Tempow’s president, tells Engadget that to make it possible to send a signal to six speakers at once, the company didn’t have to compress the sound any further than it normally does. The company would also have kept the latency to a minimum.

In addition to surround sound, Tempow also sees other applications for the technology. For example, sound in one language could be sent over the regular speakers, while connected headphones receive a translation. The sound levels can also be adjusted separately for each speaker.

There are currently no devices equipped with the technology available. The company has already built a similar system in the Motorola Moto X4 smartphone. This device can connect to multiple bluetooth speakers at the same time and send the same signal to each. Later this year, the technology will be available on two more telephones and Tempow is already in talks with several television manufacturers to release TAP TV on their equipment.
