Commits point out that Chrome on Android will get HDR support
Google’s commitments to Chrome for Android’s source code indicate that the mobile browser will soon gain support for HDR videos. That support is currently not there, although Android has supported HDR content since version 7.0.
The commits are intended to recognize and set metadata of HDR videos in, among other things, the vp9 codec. The commits are in Chromium, the open source browser that forms the basis of Chrome, which is the Google release of that same browser.
Of course, a screen is needed that can show HDR videos, says XDA-Developers. The Samsung Galaxy S8, Note 8, Google Pixels, LG V30 and recent high-end Sony Xperia devices, among others, have a screen that is capable of showing HDR images. Chrome does not yet support the images, but YouTube and Netflix, among others, already did.
