Code points out Apple Watch is getting support for 3rd party watchfaces
There is code in the latest version of watchOS that indicates that the Apple Watch will be able to run third-party watchfaces in the future. That is currently not possible. It is unknown if and when the feature would come.
The code can be found in watchOS 4.3.1, 9to5Mac reports. One of the files in the NanoTimeKit service appears to be intended for communication with Xcode, the program for macOS where developers can build and test apps. In addition, there is a message in a place in the file that this is where code from developers for watchfaces would be placed.
At the moment, the Apple Watch only has watch faces that Apple has made itself. However, developers can make complications for Apple’s watchfaces, so that information from apps can enter the watchface. Other smartwatch operating systems, such as Google’s Wear OS and Samsung’s Tizen, do support watchfaces from third-party developers.
Within two months, Apple will host its WWDC developer conference. That is where the manufacturer often shows major new features for its operating system. These then come in upgrades that come out in the fall.
