Code in Oculus software hints at Rift S VR headset with built-in cameras
The next VR headset from Oculus is called the Rift S and will have integrated cameras. This is reported by UploadVR, which discovered clues in the Oculus PC software regarding the name and the possibilities of the new VR glasses.
Rumors have been circulating for some time that a Rift S was in development. According to UploadVR, Oculus’ PC software code contains references that confirm the device’s existence and provide insight into the headset’s capabilities. The new interface would contain a setting that is described as lighting frequency for Rift S cameras to adjust to room lighting, from which UploadVR infers that the VR headset has built-in cameras. This would mean that the user no longer needs external cameras to track body movements, as is the case with the current Rift. This would make it easier, for example, to take the VR system with you to a friend.
UploadVR also found a software setting in the code to adjust the IPD or Interpupillary Distance; that is the distance between the two pupils. That may indicate that Facebook, the parent company of Oculus, is moving away from the original hardware-based IPD adaptation.
Nothing is known yet about the price and release date of the Rift S, or what the headset will eventually be called. There may be more clarity about this at the Mobile World Congress that will take place in Barcelona at the end of February.
