Code hints at the arrival of Google Maps navigation via well-lit roads
Google seems to be planning to add a new way of navigating to Maps. Users can choose to plan their route through well-lit roads, for example when walking home alone at night.
The internet giant has not yet made the new functionality public, but XDA Developers found references in the source code of Google Maps. These are in the beta version of 10.31.0, with a number of strings referring to navigating on well-lit roads. However, there are no screenshots available yet of what this will look like.
Based on the source code found, users can choose a well-lit road via a route indicated in yellow. The degree of lighting also seems to be present in the software. Furthermore, Maps will indicate if there is no information about the lighting.
Because Google itself has not yet released any information about the new function, it is still unclear when it will be available to users. It is also not known whether information about the degree of street lighting is immediately entered into the application in all countries and regions.
