CoD: Modern Warfare 2 Remaster Won’t Release on Russian PlayStation Store

Sony will not release the now released remaster of the CoD: Modern Warfare 2 campaign on the Russian PlayStation Store. The reason is not entirely clear, but is probably partly related to the infamous No Russian mission in the game.

The Russian Call of Duty account on Twitter reports in a statement that the Modern Warfare 2 campaign remaster is entirely fictitious and has been recreated in HD quality. “Sony Interactive Entertainment has decided not to sell the game in the Russian PlayStation store.” The game will be released online in Russia for PC and Xbox One; physical versions may still be released in Russia.

A reason is not given, but it is believed to be partly related to the infamous No Russian mission. In the original Modern Warfare 2 and also in the remaster is this mission, in which Russian terrorists cause death and destruction on a Russian airport. At the time, that led to the console versions of the original game being pulled from Russian stores. There was then a version without this mission.

Incidentally, Sony already removed Call of Duty: Modern Warfare from the Russian PlayStation Store in October last year. That decision also stated that it was a ‘fictional game’. In Modern Warfare from 2019, Russia is not portrayed too positively either. The story is set against the background of a terrorist organization that acquires chemical weapons. In part of the hard-hitting single-player story, players take on the role of a young girl named Farah. She is in a city in the Middle East that is being bombed by Russia. Farah and some family members also get into a fight with Russian soldiers there. Ultimately, she will resist Russian rule.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2: Campaign Remastered has been available on PlayStation 4 since Tuesday and will also be released on Xbox One and PC on April 30. There is no multiplayer and it is purely a graphically polished version of the original campaign from the game from 2009.
