Redfall, the shooter from Bethesda studio Arkane that will be released in 2023, can also be played completely as a single player game. The game is a co-op shooter for up to four people, but the makers now emphasize that players can go through the entire game solo if they want to.

Redfall is Arkane’s first co-op shooter. The studio is known for its narrative single-player games, such as Dishonored, Prey, and Deathloop. Arkane CEO Harvey Smit emphasizes that Redfall can also be played alone. Players then choose from one of the available four ‘heroes’ and according to Smit the game can be played at a different speed. “The pace becomes more exploratory. You can use stealth to evade or outsmart enemies.”

It doesn’t seem possible to play Redfall with computer controlled team members. Bethesda doesn’t say anything about that. The explanation does state that there are gameplay advantages for players who play together. By forming a ‘squad’ it is possible to combine the powers of the different characters.

Arkane has put more details online about the four different characters from which players can choose. In co-op mode, it is also possible to use the same character as another player.

Redfall was announced in 2021 and should have been released this summer, but the release date has been pushed back to sometime in 2023. The game is coming to PC and Xbox Series X and S, and will be available directly on Game Pass. The PC version is also coming to Steam and the Epic Games Store.

The game revolves around the American village of Redfall in the state of Massachusetts, which has been attacked by vampires and where all the sunlight is blocked. Players have to reclaim the place and get superpowers to do so. At the Xbox and Bethesda showcase earlier in June, the first gameplay footage shown.
