Cloudflare introduces detailed speed test
Cloudflare has made an extensive speed test available. Through the site, users gain insight into the download and upload speed, latency and jitter of their connection. Results can be viewed per part and exported as a CSV file.
The Cloudflare speed test consists of various parts and the results can be viewed separately. For example, packages of 10kB, 100kB, 1MB, 25MB and 100MB are downloaded and tables show how fast that goes. According to Cloudflare, the small downloads are representative of, for example, loading CSS stylesheets and json blobs. The larger downloads should provide insight into the maximum bandwidth of the connection.
In addition to latency, the test also measures jitter. This indicates how stable the latency is. Users can click through to all results via the site to see extensive reports per component. It is also possible to export all results in CSV format. The source code is available on GitHub.
Cloudflare says it will put the speed test online so that people who are now working from home due to the corona crisis can see how their internet connection is performing. According to the service, measurement data is collected anonymously and only used to improve Cloudflare’s own services.
Update: the speedtest does not currently give any results for the upload speed. Cloudflare has temporarily disabled that test due to unexpected results.
