Cloud storage service Wuala will be discontinued in November – update
Cloud storage service Wuala is going to close its doors. Users have until November 15 to secure their cloud data. After that, everything will be deleted. The service would no longer show enough promise for growth and revenue.
The website of the peer-to-peer cloud storage service states that it is no longer possible to purchase or renew services at Wuala with immediate effect. From September 30, the storage will be read-only and on November 15, the service will cease to exist and all data will be deleted. Users must therefore secure their data before that time. Users can get their overpaid money back, unless that credit does not exceed 10 euros.
Wuala advises users to switch to Tresorit. That is a cloud storage service of Swiss-Hungarian origin. Like Wuala, Tresorit uses end-to-end encryption, meaning only the user can access their data, unlike Dropbox or Box. Tools have even been set up to facilitate the migration and users are provided with a discount code for Tresorit.
The company behind Wuala, the Swiss Caleido AG, was acquired in 2009 by LaCie, which is best known for its external hard drives. LaCie, in turn, is a subsidiary of Seagate.
Update, 14:43: Speaking to The Register, a Seagate representative said the company is “closing its Wuala service so it can focus on areas that show the most promise for growth and revenue.” This has been incorporated into the article.
