Classic Dragon Quests Games Coming to Nintendo Switch on September 27

Japanese publisher Square Enix will release the first three classic games from the Dragon Quest series for Nintendo Switch on September 27. The three titles from the so-called Erdrick trilogy are available separately as digital downloads from Nintendo eShop.

Square Enix reports that the original 1986 Dragon Quest will be available for $5, while 1987’s Dragon Quest II: Luminaries of the Legendary Line will cost $6.50. The third part of the trilogy, Dragon Quest III: The Seeds of Salvation, was released in 1988 and costs $12.50. The first Dragon Quest was released in Japan on the Nintendo Famicon and in the US on the NES.

According to the publisher, this Switch release of the three titles is “a tribute to the time when the heritage began.” The company says it’s a modern collection of the classic titles with simple and intuitive controls that mimic the old gameplay.

The Switch releases of the original games are based on mobile ports of the games, which were released for iOS in 2014 and then for Android. The trilogy with the jrpgs was also released for the Game Boy Color.

Incidentally, the release of the trilogy for the Switch coincides with the release of Dragon Quest XI S: Echos of an Elusive Age. This is the latest title in the Dragon Quest series, where players can optionally opt for a retro graphic style. According to the developer, the release of the old trilogy is the first time these titles are playable on a console in Europe.
