Civilization VI is getting a battle royale mode
With the arrival of an update, the turn-based strategy game Sid Meier’s Civilization VI has received a new multiplayer mode that has quite a few similarities with the battle royale principle from shooters.
A trailer and patch notes, among other things, show that this new mode is called Red Death and is all about keeping your Civilian unit alive. The last player to have such a unit alive wins the game. Red Death represents a radioactive storm that is swallowing the planet, with a safe ring appearing somewhere on the playing field and gradually shrinking. Units cannot heal in the Red Death and the damage from radioactivity increases throughout the game. Furthermore, the world consists of destroyed cities and poisonous water.
In this battle royale mode, players cannot build civilizations or build buildings; it’s about managing your faction in a post-apocalyptic setting, where combat units have to protect a civilian from attacks and attempts to capture him. There are all kinds of different factions to choose from, ranging from crazy scientists to pirates or mutants.
The Red Death mode can accommodate up to twelve players, although there are also playing field sizes that are more suitable for smaller groups. Players can compete against other players, but also against the artificial intelligence.
Each turn, you can explore the playing field in hopes of collecting more units and raising them in rank. If necessary, there are even nuclear warheads to be found, which can of course be deployed. The free update that adds this game mode is automatically downloaded via Steam, according to the makers.
