Civilization V is available for Linux
Sid Meier’s Civilization V has been available for Linux since Tuesday. The port of CIV:V to Linux is, according to Aspyr Media, which executed the port, primarily intended for the Linux operating system SteamOS, of which a test version is currently available.
In the future, Aspyr will add support for Ubuntu 14.04 and some video cards that are not currently supported through updates. SteamOS is currently only compatible with Nvidia, Intel, and AMD cards. The American Aspyr Media previously developed ports for games such as Civilization V, Borderlands 2 and Rage. CIV:V is the first game that Aspyr has ported to Linux and SteamOS; the company normally focuses mainly on OS X.
Aspyr asks gamers to provide feedback on the port through its support page. This is to be able to deliver games that it will release on Linux in the future better from the start. To celebrate that the first triple A game has received a port optimized for SteamOS, Civilization V and all accompanying DLC will be on sale at a discount until 7pm CET on Wednesday evening.
CIV:V isn’t the first triple A game to come out for Linux. For example, Left 4 Dead 2 and Portal already received a Linux release. SteamOS is a Linux operating system developed by Valve that focuses specifically on gaming machines. The operating system has been available as a test version since the end of 2013.
