Cinema 4D developer Maxon acquires ZBrush maker Pixologic.
Maxon, the creator of the 3D renderer Cinema 4D, has signed an acquisition agreement with Pixologic. That is the company behind ZBrush, a tool that allows users to model 3D models. The acquisition still has to be officially approved.
When the takeover is complete, Pixologic will be closed and Maxon will receive all its assets. The entire team, including the founder and CEO of Pixologic, will join the German company. The ZBrush software will still exist. Maxon CEO David McGavran says the acquisition will offer a ‘more extensive’ and ‘more powerful’ toolset for digital artists. It is unknown how much money will be involved in the acquisition.
ZBrush is used for creating 3d models and effects in many series, movies and games. Examples include Game of Thrones, the Pixar movies, and the Uncharted series. Cinema 4D is used for The Polar Express, Tron: Legacy and several Avengers movies, among others. Both pieces of software can be used for creating 3d models, but are better suited for slightly different purposes. For this reason, both toolsets are often used jointly by digital artists.
