Chromecast with Google TV gets support for HDR10+

Google will support Samsung’s HDR standard HDR10+ on its latest cast dongle, the Chromecast with Google TV. The streaming service Paramount+ will also support the HDR standard, although this streaming service is not yet available in the Benelux.

HDR10+ Technologies, the organization responsible for HDR10+, reports that Google has certified one or more products to the standard. Google, through Matt Frost, its director of product management, says it sees HDR10+ as an important element for the Chromecast with Google TV, but says the same is true for other undisclosed platforms. Perhaps the support of this HDR standard will eventually also come to older Chromecast products.

With HDR10+, Samsungs has been trying to offer an alternative to Dolby Vision for years. They are both HDR standards that, in contrast to HDR10, offer the possibility to add dynamic metadata to the HDR signal, so that, for example, the brightness can be adjusted per scene or frame. HDR10+ is mainly supported by Samsung and presented as a royalty-free and open source alternative to Dolby Vision. Companies like Amazon, Samsung, Panasonic and Philips support HDR10+, but Dolby Vision is still a lot more dominant.
