Chris Lattner leaves after six months as CEO of Tesla Autopilot software
Chris Lattner quits Tesla. He was appointed chief executive of the Autopilot division early this year, but now says he is not a good fit for the company. Tesla thinks the same. Lattner worked at Apple since 2005 and was the founder of the Swift programming language.
Tesla has hired deep learning and computer vision expert Andrej Karpathy to replace Lattner, TechCrunch reports. Karpathy was also involved as a researcher at OpenAI, the non-profit organization supported by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, among others.
Karpathy will be titled “Director of AI and Autopilot Vision” and will work with Jim Keller, who initially worked in Tesla’s hardware division but now leads both the hardware and software divisions for autonomous driving. Keller has been with Tesla since early 2016. He is a prominent CPU architect, responsible for several AMD CPUs and Apple Socs.
On Twitter gives Lattner himself indicates that he is looking for a new job. Several companies seem to be interested in him. Among other things, a Google employee tweets that the search giant would like to have him.
Chris Lattner joined Apple in 2005, where he held various positions. In 2010, he started work on Swift, the programming language introduced in 2014. In recent years, Lattner has headed the development tools team. Before working at Apple, Chris Lattner was one of the main authors of the LLVM compiler.
