Chris Lattner Joins Google’s AI Research Department After Leaving Tesla

Chris Lattner, one of the creators of Apple’s Swift programming language, has announced that he will be joining Google Brain. That department is involved in artificial intelligence within the search giant. Lattner recently left the automaker Tesla.

lattner made announced via Twitter that he is “very excited to be joining Google Brain next week” and that he will work to make artificial intelligence more accessible. It is unclear what exactly he will do. Bloomberg, citing his own sources, writes that he will work on the machine learning software library TensorFlow, which Google made open source in 2015.

In January, Lattner became vice president of the Autopilot Software division at Tesla, leaving after six months. He said he didn’t fit in the company. He then indicated on Twitter that he was looking for a new job, after which a Google employee announced that the company would like to hire him.

Lattner initially worked as one of the main authors on the LLVM compiler. He joined Apple in 2005 and held various positions there. In 2010, he began work on Swift, the programming language introduced in 2014. In recent years at Apple, Lattner headed the development tools team.
