Chinese manufacturer wants to release Windows 10 handheld console

GamePad Digital has started a campaign on Indiegogo to make the GPD Win: a Windows 10 handheld with 5.5″ screen, Cherry Trail soc, 4GB ram and 64GB storage. The game console will be equipped with joysticks and a qwerty keyboard .

GPD already released several handheld consoles based on Android, the GPD Win would be the first Windows device from the Chinese manufacturer. At the moment, the handheld seems to be only in a sketch phase. The company does not show a video of a working product, but only shows images and renders of mock-ups for its campaign on Indiegogo. The handheld should have a full qwerty keyboard, as well as a dpad and two alps joysticks, one of which could double as a mouse. When closed, the GPD Win measures 15.5×9.7×2.2cm and weighs 300 grams.

The company plans to build in an Intel Atom x5-Z8500 soc, which will have four cores clocked at 1.44GHz and burst to 2.24GHz. The eighth generation HD Graphics GPU runs at 600MHz. The chip is supplemented with 4GB lpddr3-1600 ram and 64GB emmc flash memory. There should also be a micro-SD card slot in the housing that supports cards with storage capacity up to 128GB.

For the screen, GPD wants to use a laminated capacitive touchscreen. It is a 5.5″ IPS LCD with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels. There would also be a mini HDMI port so that the handheld can be connected to a larger screen. There is also a USB 3.0 port and a micro USB port included in the specs A 6000mAh battery should provide six to eight hours of gaming fun, though that will depend heavily on the processing power the games require.

According to the campaign timeline, in the first two months of this year, the PCB design and procurement of all necessary parts started. The consoles should be assembled in March, with a prototype ready in April. The first batch of production copies should make its way to the media in August. GPD expects to be able to deliver its handheld to the backers in October 2016.

If you invest $ 299 in the project, you will receive a copy of the handheld console if it is successful. GPD then plans to put the device in stores for $499. The prices are exclusive of shipping costs, VAT and import costs.
