Chinese manufacturer shows Shadow VR headset based on Vive Wave platform
Shadow Creator comes with the Shadow VR. That is a standalone headset based on the Vive Wave platform. Inside the headset is a Snapdragon 835-soc and it can run mobile apps from the HTC Viveport store.
In terms of functionality, the Shadow VR is comparable to HTC’s own Vive Focus. However, the variant from the Chinese manufacturer is cheaper and uses LCDs instead of OLED panels. The resolution is 2560×1440 pixels, or 1280×1440 pixels per eye. The resolution is therefore equal to that of the Oculus Quest, which standalone VR glasses will be released in the spring of 2019.
Shadow Creator includes two 6DoF controllers that it has developed itself. They would work with ‘ray tracing’, but judging by the images it seems that there are cameras in the headset that follow the movements of the controllers. HTC has also developed 6DoF controllers for its Vive Focus, but they work with an accessory for tracking.
The Shadow VR headset is on the website of the Chinese manufacturer for 3499 yuan, converted that is about 444 euros. However, according to American media such as UploadVR and Engadget, the VR headset will be released worldwide on November 11 and the suggested retail price is $399 in the US.
