The Chinese government will this week stop its app to track the travel of Chinese citizens. That app was there in connection with the Chinese state’s corona policy, but taking the app offline is related to the relaxation of the corona measures.

The Chinese Academy of Information and Communications Technology announces the disappearance of the app. As of Tuesday evening Chinese time, the app will no longer work. The app, which works with telephone numbers of citizens, keeps track of whether people have been to cities that the government considers to pose an increased risk of contracting the coronavirus.

That app was necessary to gain access to public places, among other things, and tracked the travels of citizens through the country. Extensions of the app in WeChat and Alipay, among others, will also no longer work from Tuesday evening.

The disappearance of the app is part of the relaxation of the corona measures that follows the massive protests against the corona policy in the country. These protests and strict measures have led, among other things, to Apple having to warn that the iPhone 14 Pro is poorly available.
